About the Opportunity:

AFGRI, a leader in the agricultural services sector, is offering an extraordinary apprenticeship opportunity across its South African branches. We are searching for ambitious, self-driven individuals with a passion for technical excellence to join our esteemed Apprenticeship Program.

This program is designed to cultivate future Artisans by providing a comprehensive blend of informal training, on-the-job development, and mentorship. Over the course of three years, apprentices will rotate through multidisciplinary teams, gaining invaluable experience and knowledge from seasoned professionals. Upon successful completion, apprentices will earn a qualification as a Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic.

The initial six months serve as a probationary period, allowing both AFGRI and the apprentice to ensure a mutually beneficial relationship. During this time, either party may terminate the agreement without repercussions. Following the probationary period, apprentices will commence formal training under an AFGRI contract, engaging in both practical and theoretical learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Technical Training: Develop skills as a technician or mechanic through hands-on experience and specialized training.
  • Maintenance and Repairs: Provide repair and maintenance services for various machinery.
  • Stock Management: Oversee inventory management, ensuring efficient operations.
  • Customer Support: Deliver exceptional service and support to customers.
  • General Workshop Duties: Contribute to the overall functionality and organization of the workplace.

Training and Development:

  • Practical Training: Apprentices will attend Practical Training Institutes to complete various apprenticeship phases as needed.
  • Distance Learning: Apprentices may engage in distance learning and are expected to participate in necessary courses, including attending classes on Saturdays.
  • Product Training: Receive specialized training from internal experts, as well as at the John Deere Training Facility in Boksburg and other partner suppliers.

The apprenticeship program is cost-free for participants who successfully complete their training. However, failure to pass any training components will require the apprentice to redo the training at their own expense and time. The apprenticeship agreement spans three years, with a “work-back period” expected after qualification. Should an apprentice choose to withdraw during this period, they will incur costs proportional to the phase and timing of the withdrawal. The contract cannot exceed four years, after which it will be terminated if the apprentice has not achieved qualification.
